Plumbing Design at KBSO Consulting
—
When people think about successful buildings, plumbing systems are rarely the first thing that comes to mind. Yet every facility depends on plumbing infrastructure working seamlessly behind the scenes. Clean water, reliable drainage, hot water delivery, fire protection, natural gas distribution, and code compliance all rely on systems that must perform every day without interruption.
At KBSO Consulting, plumbing design is about creating infrastructure that supports how a building functions today while accommodating future demands. Whether it’s a healthcare facility, school, hospitality venue, commercial kitchen, or corporate workspace, we develop systems that balance performance, maintainability, safety, and long-term value.
The transformation of Shamrock Station in Westfield, Indiana reflects this approach. Originally constructed as the Westfield Public Library, the building was reimagined as a community-focused event center for Westfield Washington Schools. While much of the structure remained in place, the infrastructure required to serve event spaces, commercial kitchens, retail functions, offices, and student support areas was fundamentally different from the building’s original purpose.
Understanding the Building’s Needs
Successful plumbing design begins long before piping layouts and equipment schedules are developed. We work to identify operational goals, usage demands, maintenance expectations, and regulatory requirements so every plumbing decision contributes to the project’s overall success.
For Shamrock Station, that meant evaluating everything from event occupancy and food service operations to fixture usage patterns and long-term maintenance considerations. The process also required a thorough assessment of existing infrastructure to determine what could remain, what needed to be replaced, and how new systems would integrate with the building’s existing utilities.
These early decisions establish the framework for plumbing systems that perform efficiently on day one and continue delivering value throughout the life of the facility.
Translating Building Needs Into Infrastructure
Once project goals are established, we develop plumbing systems that align with the building’s intended use while allowing flexibility for future needs. This process transforms design intent into coordinated infrastructure designed for reliability, efficiency, and long-term performance.
Domestic Water Systems
Domestic water design extends well beyond supplying fixtures. We evaluate fixture demand, occupancy requirements, equipment loads, water heating needs, and distribution strategies to develop systems that deliver consistent performance throughout a facility.
At Shamrock Station, new domestic hot and cold water distribution systems, water heating equipment, recirculation systems, and isolation strategies were incorporated to accommodate significantly higher water usage than the building’s original design ever anticipated. These improvements ensure reliable service while simplifying future maintenance and system management.
Sanitary and Waste Systems
Sanitary infrastructure must safely and efficiently remove waste while meeting code requirements and accommodating architectural and structural constraints. Our team develops gravity drainage, venting, and waste piping systems designed to support both functionality and constructability.
Portions of the original plumbing infrastructure at Shamrock Station were removed while new sanitary and vent systems were introduced throughout renovated areas. Existing services were incorporated where practical, and below-slab modifications were carefully coordinated to accommodate the new floor plan and fixture layout.
Utility and Specialty Systems
Many projects require plumbing infrastructure that extends beyond domestic water and drainage. Natural gas distribution, water treatment systems, pressure regulation, backflow prevention, fire protection systems, and specialized equipment connections all contribute to overall building performance.
The addition of commercial and catering kitchens introduced new utility requirements that were not part of the building’s original design. Gas service upgrades, kitchen equipment connections, and supporting plumbing infrastructure were incorporated to provide the capacity and reliability needed for daily operations and special events.

Integrated Design and Coordination
Plumbing systems do not exist in isolation. Pipe routing affects structural elements, equipment connections influence room layouts, and utility services often intersect with mechanical, electrical, and architectural systems.
At Shamrock Station, integrating modern plumbing infrastructure into an existing facility required careful coordination across all disciplines. Water service relocation, kitchen support systems, sanitary routing, utility upgrades, and equipment connections were developed alongside architectural and MEP modifications to ensure the building functioned as a cohesive whole.
Addressing these considerations early helps reduce construction conflicts, improve installation efficiency, and preserve design intent throughout the project lifecycle.
The Outcome
Across all our projects, the goal remains the same: to deliver plumbing solutions that support building performance, protect occupant health and safety, and operate reliably over time.
The Shamrock Station renovation demonstrates how thoughtful plumbing design can help unlock new possibilities within an existing facility. By aligning infrastructure with the building’s new purpose, the project transformed a former library into a versatile community destination while preserving the value of the existing structure.
At KBSO, we help owners, architects, and designers bring their vision to life by connecting operational needs with practical plumbing solutions that perform in the real world.
